North East Stakeholder Briefing Day: Tackling Illicit Tobacco for Better Health

Friday 15th January 2010
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Location: the Durham Centre, Belmont Industrial Estate, Durham

The North East is a hotspot for illicit tobacco. Over a quarter of smokers in the region tell us that they buy illicit tobacco. Almost nine out of ten people think it is a danger to kids because they can buy it cheaply and easily and six in ten understand that the illicit trade brings crime into their local community.

Fresh Smoke Free North East and its colleagues in the North West and Yorkshire and the Humber regions are working together on the North of England Tackling Illicit Tobacco for Better Health Programme which aims to cut smoking rates by reducing the supply of and demand for illicit tobacco.

Key local people who should be there include: Local tobacco control alliance leads Local Stop Smoking Service managers Local authority Trading Standards leads Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership Chairs/Coordinators Local Strategic Partnership Chairs/ Coordinators Local Criminal Justice Board Chairs/Coordinators Local Authority Communications leads PCO Communications leads
