VOICES Redesign and testing to inform a National End of Life Care survey

'Stunning inequities' in end-of-life care, report says
An independent review is calling for a set of universal standards for care of the dying after uncovering "stunning inequities" in provision in England. The inquiry, requested last year by the government, says the current system is confusing and inconsistent.

Consultation on the end-of-life care draft quality standard
This draft quality standard contains 20 statements for the care of adults with advanced, progressive, or life-limiting conditions who are approaching the end of their life, and for adults who die suddenly or after a very brief illness, in settings where care is provided by health and social care staff.

Recognised, valued and supported: next steps for the carers strategy
Minister of State for Care Services Paul Burstow launched Recognised, valued and supported: Next steps for the Carers Strategy on 25 November. It is a cross-government publication, led by the Carers Team in DH. It followed a call for views on priorities and received over 750 responses from carers, care workers, the voluntary sector (national and local), councils, NHS bodies, representative bodies and carers' organisations. The strategy sets out the Government's priorities for carers, identifies the actions that the Government will take over the next four years to ensure the best possible outcomes for carers and those they support. It has direct relevance to many of the strategic priorities set out in 'Better Health, Fairer Health'.

Report on Dementia deaths highlights new challenges for End of Life care
This report published by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network (NEoLCIN), says commissioners and providers across adult health and social care will be faced with meeting the needs of more people dying with dementia, including Alzheimer's, as the population ages. It confirms that, unlike other conditions, most people with these conditions die in care homes.

Fellowship Opportunity - Public Health at End of Life
Are you a clinician or health professional with a desire to undertake a research degree and research project work on the topic of public health at the end of life?
If so, you may be interested in a scheme now run by the Dunhill Medical Trust, offering Research Training Fellowships (RTFs). The RTFs are intended to be flexible and may be undertaken on either a full-time (three year) or part-time (up to 4 year) basis. The awards may either be in the form of a PhD studentship or may be granted to experienced health professionals who wish to branch into research. Financial support will include either a PhD stipend or an individual’s salary at the appropriate grade (including on-costs), plus an additional amount, up to £10k annually, to cover research expenses, tuition and other fees.

End of life care planning with people who have a personal health budget
In June 2010, a group of people came together to discuss the issues described in this paper. This group included people who use services, family members, people from the personal health budgets pilot sites, hospices, key partners from the health, social care and voluntary sectors and the Department of Health. The group explored the current context of practices and policies that impact on end of life.
